- chorus -
Oh the wind, the cold, north wind, it blows across the day-o,
His breath hangs there and it chills the air 'til winter's gone away-o,
Oh the cold, north wind.
- 1 -
A fierce wind and a frozen wind blows around my door,
While I inside lay warm away from the winter's icy roar,
Then through the cracks and the crevices he whistles and he sings,
Declaring his supremacy 'til the return of spring.
- chorus -
Oh the wind, the cold, north wind, it blows across the day-o,
His breath hangs there and it chills the air ' til winter's gone away-o,
Oh the cold, north wind.
- 2 -
Many's the night I lie awake with thoughts to venture forth,
Away from this cold, winter land, away from my remorse.
Then through the dark and the winter gloom I hear his icy wail,
I feel it wrap around my heart to chill my very soul.
- chorus -
Oh the wind, the cold, north wind, it blows across the day-o,
His breath hangs there and it chills the air ' til winter's gone away-o,
Oh the cold, north wind.
- 3 -
Many's the day I pass the time in battle with this foe,
Foraging for fallen wood to make my fire glow.
But the warmer and the brighter I try to make it burn,
The colder comes his frosty breath from which I cannot turn.
- chorus -
Oh the wind, the cold, north wind, it blows across the day-o,
His breath hangs there and it chills the air ' til winter's gone away-o,
Oh the cold, north wind.
- 4 -
As it seems I've got my strength and courage for the road,
Then comes the virgin breath of spring with promises untold.
And with the breath of warmth and life she dries up all of my tears,
No longer need I fret the cold, no longer 'til next year.
- chorus -
Oh the wind, the cold, north wind, it blows across the day-o,
His breath hangs there and it chills the air ' til winter's gone away-o,
Oh the cold, north wind.
